In the Via Toledo (also with the old name “Via Roma” called), one of Naples’s longest shopping streets, you find numerous boutiques, a department store, and branches of big chains. Located in this street, which is for the most part a pedestrian area, is also the Galleria Umberto I, which impresses by its neoclassical architecture.
The other shopping centre in the Campania region is Capri, near Naples, with many famous boutiques and popular shops on the island. In the Via San Sebastiano across the Monastero di Santa Chiara you can find many music stores that sell amongst others mandolins, because the conservatory is close by. Also nearby is the street of the booksellers, Via Port’Alba, with stores and booths offering antique books about the Naples of the past.
If you like cribs (presepe in Italian) and want to see really all about the Neapolitan Crib, you should definitely visit the famous street of the nativity scene makers, in Naples’s historic city, the Via San Gregorio Armeno.
Here you can admire numerous shops with creative nativity figurines in all variations. Besides the Jesus- and Madonna figurines you will also find detailed copies of all household objects, gastronomic delights, exotic animals, and sometimes even caricatured politicians. [Read more…]
There are many freshwater lakes and streams in and around Naples that are heavily stocked and ideal for fresh water fishing. To fish in fresh water you need to purchase a year’s membership card from the Federazione Italiana della Pesca Sportiva, which has an office is every province. Sea fishing is possible from the shores, from boats and even underwater and is allowed almost everywhere without a permit.
Naples has many tennis courts in and around the city and it is often best to book ahead by telephone. Popular public courts can be found in Via Giochi del Mediterraneo in Naples and also at Forio d’Ischia on the island of Ischia. Many of the more expensive hotels also have courts and non-residents are usually able to use them by arrangement with either the hotel or tourist information office.
There are about 90 courses, with about 30-40 open to the public. Some are semi-private, open to the public only from May through December; others are totally public, and others are resort courses attached to area hotels. Pretty impressive! No matter if you are an amateur or a pro, you’re sure to find the golf course that best suits you. Some golf clubs offer packages that include accommodation for three days, meals, three days of golf an other amenities.
There are facilities for sailing at almost all of the nearby islands in the Naples region and it is possible to bring your own boat to Italy for six months without any paperwork if you transport it by car. The main Bay in Naples has yacht harbours in Posillipo in Naples, Capri, Procida, Porto, Casamicciola, Lacco Ameno and Forio d’Ischia on the island of Ischia. At most resorts it is possible to hire boats and equipment.
From Piazza San Domenico Maggiore, walk along Via San Biago. This street is known as Spaccanapoli because it splits the old center of Naples in half. The original Greek city of Neapolis was here and the area still retains the same narrow streets from Greek times. Spaccanapoli was one of the three main east-west Greek streets. [Read more…]
From Santa Chiara, take Via Benedetto Croce to Piazza San Domenico Maggiore. On this square you’ll see an obelisk built by the monks of San Martino after the plague of 1656 in which many people of Naples died (the monks saved themselves by shutting themselves inside the monastery). As you face the square, the building on the left is Palazzo Petrucci, the oldest building with its original entry and courtyard. Farther back is the entrance to the church of San Domenico Maggiore.
